Spotted hyena mandible, c. 40,000 years old. Castlepook Cave, Co. Cork, Ireland. . . A newly published paper in the international scientific journal, Boreas, by colleagues and I, shed new light on the presence of this animal and others in ancient Ireland before the last Ice Age. . We redated previously dated animal bones from Castlepook Cave, Foley Cave and Shandon Cave and found that with the new radiocarbon dating method, dates moved to much older dates – between 4,000 and 12,000 years older. .
